Reading: Psalm 23

YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER. 

Today we are going to look at what it means to be adopted by our Heavenly Father, it takes time to get to know our natural parents, so we need to put in the time getting to know our Heavenly Father, through reading His word, by worshipping Him. 

 1Jn4:16(N K J) & we have known & believe that the love that God has for us. God is love, & he who abides in love abides in God & God in him.   

The Bible tells us many times that God loves us. But how many of God's children still lack revelation concerning God's love? The truth is, very few of Gods people really know how much He loves them. If they did, they would act &  differently. Years ago when I came to Christ I was studying how we could receive His love, THEN I suddenly realised I was in desperate need of it myself. The Lord led me in my study to this verse we have just read & emphasised the importance of His love. This means that God's love should be something we are actually aware of. But how does one find this awareness. 

as you study this subject you will become conscious of God's love for you through thinking about His love & by confessing it aloud. I encourage you to learn the Scriptures on the love of God, & meditate on them, confess them out of your mouth. Over time the revelation of His unconditional love will become a reality to you, as it did for me. 

His love is so real to me now that even in hard times I am comforted by consciously knowing that He loves me. 

Rom 8:35-39 tells us we cannot be separated from His love.(N L T) 

 Can anything ever separate us from Christ's love? Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say "for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep." No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loved us. & I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angles nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below.-indeed, nothing all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. 

For those of us who are discouraged this is a powerful passage gives assurance of Christ's love, active at every moment in our life. Are any causes of discouragement greater then those Paul mentions? & if not, then we are never separated from Christ's love. 

As parents love to give gifts to their children, our Heavenly Father delights in giving to His Children as we see in Matt 7:11(N K J) If then you being evil, know how to give good gifts to your Children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him. 

& Heb 11:6  NKJ) says... he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 

I rejoiced when I finally realised this! I know I made many mistakes in the past, BUT I also know I have diligently sought the Lord with all my heart, & that means I qualify for these rewards. I decided long ago that even though I didn't deserve them I would receive any blessing that God wanted to give me. I hope you will do the same also. 

James 11:7 (N K J) says Every good  & perfect gift is from above & come down from the Father of lights... 

We should be thanking Him that every good & perfect gift in our life comes down from Him, & that there is never any variation with Him. 

Ps 145:8-9 ( N K J) The Lord is gracious & full of compassion, slow to anger & great in mercy.  The Lord is good to all & His tender mercies are over all His works. 

It is God's desire to be gracious & full of compassion, He will not force it on us, He is a gentleman, it is our choice to receive it. 

Deut 30:19 NKJ) explains it... I have set before you life & death, blessings & curses; therefore choose life, that your dependants may live. 

Thousands of thoughts are presented to our minds every day, & we must allow our minds to be renewed after the Spirit not the flesh. our carnal or wordily fleshly minds have so much practice operating freely that we think wrong thoughts without much effort at all. On the other hand, we have to purposely choose to think the right thoughts. After we have finally decided to be like-minded with God, then we will need to choose & continue to choose right thoughts. 

We have choices to make throughout our lives. in Deut 30:19 the Lord is saying to us His children, that He has set before us life & death & urges us to choose life. In pro 18:21 tells us we can choose life or death. & also says that death & life are in the power of the tongue, & they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit that is death or life. our thoughts become our words, therefore, it is vitally important that we choose life giving thoughts. 

ITim 2:4 teaches that although God desires the salvation of all men He does not violate their opportunity to choose. 

Our Father will forgive  & forget our sins He is rich in compassion & has made way for our sins to be both forgiven & forgotten. 

Ps 103 :2-3 ( N K J) says, Bless the Lord, O my soul & forget not all His benefits. Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases. 

Rehearse periodically all of God's blessings as a source of encouragement & faith. 

Ps 103 :12 NKJ) tell us how much we have been forgiven that As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. 

This verse is telling us that our transgressions shall never rise up in judgement against us, if we thoroughly forsake them, God will forgive them. The sins of believers shall not be remembered. 

 1Jn 1:9 NLT) tell us what we must do when we sin If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful & just to forgive us our sins & cleanse us from all wickedness. 

Notice that it says if we will confess our sins to God , He will cleanse us. I believe this is the spiritual parallel to the way our physical blood continuously cleanses our body. 

Just as our blood works for us all the time to keep us cleansed from all poison, the blood of Jesus works all the time, continuously cleansing us from sin. 

This verse clearly states that there is only one requirement on our part & that is to freely admit that we have sinned & confess our sins. 

An example is of Jesus healing the sick is shown in Matt 8:15-18 (N L T) When Jesus arrives at Peters house, Peters mother in law was sick in bed with a high fever. But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up & prepared a meal for Him. That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, & He healed the sick. This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said He took our sickness & removed our diseases. 

In verse 15 we see that the cure was immediate & complete & as evidence she served Him. 

 2Tim 1:7 NKJ) says that we will be free from all fear :For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power & of love & of a sound mind 

This verse teaches that timidity which is the same as fear, is not from God  & that God gives us power, love, a clam & well balanced mind, discipline, & self control. 

Fear will never stop coming against us. we must learn to do what God tell us to do whether we feel fear or not. we must do it, afraid or not if necessary, but that is what courage does; it feels the fear & does it anyway. We are not cowards if we feel fear. We are cowards only if we let fear rule our decisions. 

In Rom 8:15 NLT) Paul explains So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God's Spirit when He adopted you as His own Children. Now we call Him Abba Father. 

Abba is the Aramaic word for Daddy so we can call Him Daddy God. This verse tell us that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of adoption. Here, the word adoption means that we have been bought into God's family even though we were previously outsiders, unrelated to Him in any way. We were sinners serving satan, but God in His great mercy redeemed us & purchased us with the blood of His own Son. Think of yourself as a child of God that you are loved, accepted,  & empowered by His unconditional love for you. 

You can be confident that your Heavenly father longs to to talk with you, & help you in all areas of your life. As we have seen from the Scriptures He loves you & wants to reward you with good things. He has completely forgiven you & longs to heal you & make you whole 

Jn 17:23 NKJ) I in them & you in me, that they made be made perfect in one, & that the world may know that you have sent Me, & have loved them, as you have loved me. 

This verse is teaching us to commit ourselves to bringing unity in the Church. 

Godly living is, living in, through & for Jesus. 

Godliness can be summarised in three words: love, obedience, & unity. By living godly lives, we learn to see things as God does & adopt His word as our only standard.   

Ps 23( N L T) 

The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honour to His name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me, Your rod & your staff protect & comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honour me by anointing my head with oil. my cup overflows with blessings. Surely Your goodness & unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, & I will live in the house of the Lord for ever. 

This Psalm is so comforting. In it David tells us that our Heavenly Father leads, feeds, guides, & Shields us. He causes us to lie down & rest, & He refreshes & restores our lives.(V3) I really like the way the K J  puts this verse " He restoreth my soul". I like the word "restoreth" word The soul is comprised of the mind, the will & the emotions. 

With our souls, we process our circumstances, we entertain our thoughts, we feel & express emotions, & make decisions. What a wonderful promise- that God our Heavenly Father will restore our souls! The word restore means to bring back into existence or use. Or to bring back to an original state or condition. The word is often used in a situation when a dethroned ruler is put back on his throne. Restore also means to make restriction or refresh. 

When David says God will restore our souls & our lives, he means that God will return us to the same condition we were before we erred from following the good plan God had predestined for us before our birth, or before satan attacked us to draw out of God's plan for our lives. 

We can take confidence that Our Heavenly Father will lead us in the path of righteousness, uprightness, & right standing with Him. I think David is saying here that God individually leads us each in the path that is right for us, a path that restores us in every way to the good places God has for us. 

Our Heavenly Father has a path predestined for your restoration. If you will allow Him to do so, He will guide you by His Holy Spirit along the unique way that leads to restoration to being able to fulfil the great purposes He has for you. 

Hab 3:7 teaches us that our Heavenly Father promises to be our strength, He is the God of our salvation. That means He delivers us & provides a way out of trouble in which we find ourselves. It is so important to keep rejoicing even in times of trouble, because the joy of the Lord is our strength (Neh 8:10). Depression, discouragement, & despair only weaken us, but being positive & finding something to rejoice about adds energy to our lives. Even if you cannot find something to rejoice about you can rejoice over your relationship with the Lord. HE is your joy, not your circumstances. 

When we trust in God, He enables us to make spiritual progress even during times of trouble. Through Him we can keep walking forward. I have heard it said "keep walking when the devil is stalking." Satan's favourite tool to use against God's children is fear as I mentioned earlier. Fear immobilises us if we let it, & it prevents us from making progress. But thank God that in Him we can still make progress even in times of trouble. 

We tend to think that the highest place to be is on the mountaintop with no problems & everything going our way, BUT that is no true according to God's word. He says that our high places are trouble, suffering, & responsibility, but He promises that He will give us hinds feet. ( Hab 3:19) A hind is a type of mountain goat can leap about freely on the rocky & difficult slopes, they climb mountains with seemingly no effort at all because the way God has made them. 

So look to God as your strength, & trust in Him to help you make progress during trouble. 

In Jn 14:6 NKJ) Jesus said that I am the way , the truth, & the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 

Recognise that Jesus is the only way to our Heavenly Father, we must know Jesus to know God. 

Jesus said that He is the way, it is so very important that we see that Jesus has certain ways of doing things, & if we will submit to His way, everything will work out. BUT so often we wrestle & struggle with Him, trying to get Him to do things our way. It just doesn't work. Let Jesus be the Way in your life.

God, Our Father.~ Ganeida

Reading: Luke 15:11~32.

Today's topic is God Our Father.  We are looking at the story Jesus told in Luke 15, known to us as The Prodigal Son.  It is not the story of two siblings.  It is the story of a father & to understand it we must understand it within the context that Jesus was telling it.

 Let us start with something more recent.  Do you remember Bibi Aesha?  Married at 12 to a Taliban soldier & systematically abused until, in desperation, she ran away.  Caught she had her nose & ears removed & was left for dead, one of more than 5000 honour killings a year.

Or more recently, Raif Badawi, who has had the first of 1000 lashes for publishing a liberal blog.

One is a woman, the other a man.  What they have in common is they are members of patriarchal communities that hold to an honour code.  This is the root, the basis, the foundation of the story Jesus tells.  This is the society he operated in.  This is how his listeners would have understood family, community, society.

In such societies the family is the central institution.  It is more important than individual freedom or individual achievement.  It couldn’t be further from western ideas of individualism, autonomy, self~expression.  It is driven by Pride, Culture & Religion.  A family is ruled by its patriarch & both his & the family’s status depended upon their honour. 

In our time the weight of family honour is usually carried by the women & is tied to aspects of sexuality but traditionally honour depends upon all a family’s members upholding a code of respectability.  Violation of that code brings dishonour; shame.

Now let us move to Jesus’ story.  We have a father.  By the standards of his time & culture he is a good father.  He is reasonably wealthy ~ he has a fatted calf on hand; he is able to divide his wealth on demand; he has a good robe & even a ring. His household wears sandals.  By the standards of the day he has provided well for his family as he is supposed to do.

But all is not well in this father’s house.  There is discontent.  There is rebellion.  Neither of his sons has a relationship with him [read the story carefully] & finally the younger son gets brazen.  He demands his share of the estate.

Now what this son is saying in effect to his father is:  I wish you were dead!  See estates were never divided up until the father was dead.  To ask for what you would get on your father’s death is in effect wishing they were already dead!

The thing about this request is that all this family’s dirty linen just became public property!  It’s just not the sort of thing you can keep quiet.  Firstly the son’s share would be land, sheep, goats, oxen…seriously.  The kid can hardly lug that around in his wallet so what would he do?  Sell it off ~ cheap.  He’s in a hurry to go & live his own life out from under parental authority, parental restrictions so he liquidates the estate in a hurry.  Half his village just snapped up a luscious deal.  You live here, on this island.  You know how fast the gossip spreads.

This son has shamed his father in ways that any middle eastern Jewish father would find totally reprehensible. Worse the father has shamed himself.  Instead of publically flogging his son to protect his honour he gives him what he asks for ~ all of it!  Can’t you just hear the tongues wagging! 

But it gets jucier!  We forget the older son.  He’s there all along.  His responsibility is to help protect & guide his younger brother & thus protect the family honour.  His silence screams loud. Nowhere is it suggested he tried to talk his brother out of such shameful behaviour.  Nowhere is it suggested he went to his father & said: Dad, about that kid brother of mine… No, He cares nothing for the family honour.  In his own way he is as bad as his brother.  He just goes about it differently.

The Pharisees would have had their eyeballs popping out of their heads.  What righteous, honourable, self~ respecting Jewish father would behave in such an outrageous weak willed way?!  Who would have raised such disrespectful, shameful sons?

Typically a funeral would have been held for the younger son.  He would have been considered dead by all who knew him. But hey, he’s got all that lovely cash to squander & squander it he does.  He heads just as fast as he can into the worst of the worst: gentile, pagan, idolatrous, blasphemous & full of luscious women willing to show him a good time.

 And Dad lets him do it.  He doesn't rush to rescue him when things turn catawampus.  He doesn’t lock him in his bedroom to prevent his going.  He doesn't rush out & forcibly drag him home.  He lets him go.

Then disaster hits.  Talk about a Jewish Soap Opera.  Just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does.  Famine strikes.  Famine that has people eating their leather sandals.  Famine that has women eating their afterbirth.  Famine that has this rebellious kid hanging around someone just so he can be sent off to  mind the pigs ~ an unclean animal to this day.  Worse, he tries to eat the pig swill.  The irony is that human bodies can’t digest the carob pods the pigs can eat. They make you sick.

So there he is, stripped of every vestige of dignity, so dirt poor he tries the pig food, & abandoned by his fair weather friends.  He is going to die.  That is what happens to people in his circumstances in the middle of a famine.  They die.

At this point he doesn't so much come to his senses as weigh up his options.  If he stays he will most certainly die.  If he returns he must bear the weight of his dishonour.  He will not be allowed into his father’s house.  He will be forced to wait in the village, scorned by all the villagers who will see it as their duty to uphold the father’s honour.  After days ~ or weeks ~ his father might agree to visit him but the terms of his return will be harsh.  He will not be accepted as a son until he has repaid in full ~ & maybe not even then.  He will be publicly whipped.  Restitution will be set at the minimum wage.

In arguing with himself the son reminds himself that his father is generous & merciful: remember even the day labourers, the minimum wage earners, in his father’s house, the ones Jesus says should be paid at the end of each day so that they can eat, have more than enough bread.

Our focus is not on the son but the father.  He does none of the things expected of him, none of the *honourable* things. Why is this important?  Because this story is a parable & we understand that the father is Jesus’ Abba, Father God.  How this father treats the worst of the worst shows us something important about Abba God.

Firstly, We know He is watching & sees his son returning from afar.  We have talked about what the son expects to happen but instead the father shifts his son’s shame onto himself.  He lifts his robe & runs to greet his son.  Now both lifting of the robe & running were considered shameful things for a grown man to do. It was [& still is in some parts of the middle east] considered shameful to expose any part of the legs ~ but it is not possible to run in a long robe.  How undignified ~ especially in the light of his son’s sin. 

The father meets him before he enters the village, before any of the condemnation could begin. And then he does an even more astonishing thing.  He calls for his robe, the special robe, the one usually reserved for the oldest son’s wedding & puts it on his son, restoring to him full honour, full dignity.  He gives him a ring.  It would have been a signet ring, symbol of authority.  He demands shoes for his feet ~ only sons & members of the household wore shoes so the full privileges of the house, full sonship, was restored to him.

When we talk of the Grace of God this is what it means.  There is nothing we can do to earn it.  We may have behaved in the most awful ways imaginable but as soon as we turn to God our restoration is instantaneous.  It is complete.  There is nothing we can do, nothing we must do to be accepted back.

Now we see the oldest son’s true colours.  Instead of rejoicing that his brother has been restored to the family he is angry.  Remember I said the oldest son had no relationship with the father?  See, he knows his brother is home.  He knows his father has welcomed him, killed the fatted calf that was meant for his wedding!  He knows & he steams & stews but it is the father who comes to him, not he who goes to the father. 

See it is not enough to hang round God’s house keeping the *rules*, even doing God’s work, but having no real relationship with the father.  

Everything of God’s is ours but it will do us no good if we do not claim it.  It will do us no good if we don’t cultivate our relationship with the father.

1John 4:16 tells us God is love.  This story shows God’s love in action.

Matthew 7:11 says: …How much more will your father, who is in heaven, give good things to those who ask him… This story illustrates God’s generosity in giving, abundantly, far more than expected or asked.

The father forgives.  Psalm 103:12 declares He has removed our sins from us as the east is from the west.

Romans 8:15 tells us that we can call God, Abba, Father & we are no longer governed by fear.

And so, beloved, we must understand what the older son refused to see:  God refuses to limit the extent of His grace.  He does not abide by our rules.  His son was still a long way off when the father spies him coming & He rushes to greet him, showering him with love & affection.

  This is God’s true heart for every single one of his children who returns home.  The past is done for, wiped clean.  There is no condemnation.  There is no restitution.  The father takes our shame upon himself & welcomes us into the family as though we have never been away.

When sickness returns to your house ~ Rabqa

Lk 11:24-26 NLT) When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, searching for rest. But  when it finds none it says, "I will return to the person I came from". So it returns & finds that it's former home is all swept & in order. Then the spirit finds 7 other spirits more evil than itself, & they all enter the person & live there, so that person is worse off than before.

Be warned that returning to a past bondage from which you were once delivered results in deeper bondage.

While the promises of the new covenant are free, seeing them manifest in your life is a battle-a battle that involves your faith. The enemy will throw mental darts such as:

•                   Is it really God's will that I be healed?

•                   Is God trying to teach me a lesson?

•                   Is this problem the result of some sin?

Many believers struggle to receive because they are continually bombarded with negative messages from the enemy of their soul. One of the most challenging & difficult conflicts will manifest when the enemy attempts to return to your house.

Luke recorded the statement by Jesus that the unclean spirit departs but attempts to return to the same house from where it was expelled.

Notice that the house is swept & garnished, but it is uninhabited. The person in this story has made an effort to straighten up & has received temporary relief, but he has not properly allowed the Lord to move in & take up residence.

Eventually, the enemy moved back in & bought some unwanted company ( 7 other spirits) with him.

In Mk 5 Christ delivers the man of Gadara from 2000 unclean spirit  (v 13), this former maniac from the mountains wanted wanted to follow Jesus from city to city, Christ told this former demon possessed man to go home (v 19) & tell his friends what great things the Lord had done for him instead of encouraging him the man to follow Him.

He told the man to return to where he came from & testify his miracle. This man probably had a slight fear of returning-a fear that the demons would once again attempt to enter him.

Jesus gave him a powerful key to staying free. He said "Testify of what the Lord has done!"This statement agree with what Rev 12:11 says NLT) & they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb & by their testimony, & they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.

This verse teaches Spiritual victory we enter into. Jesus Christ has already won the victory through His death, burial & resurrection.

Conduct spiritual warfare on the basis of the shed blood of Jesus & through the declaration that He died for your sins & rose again for your justification. Love Jesus more than life itself.

Before that in Rev 12:10 it tells us that satan is called the accuser of the brethren. He tries to make us feel guilty & commended.

When we feel unhealthy, guilt, & condemnation, we must remember that God does not make us feel that way. God wants us to experience His love & feel the power of His forgiveness.

Guilt depresses us & makes us feel as though we are under a heavy burden. Jesus came to lift us up, to bring good news to us that our sins are forgiven & the penalty of them removed.

Resist guilt & condemnation by embracing the salvation authority of Christ in your life.

A born again believer who is under the covenant of Christ's blood & walking in the Word has a defence against the powers of darkness, including evil spirits.

However there is a spiritual principle that a believer should be made aware of. There are two types of conflicts: attacks & counter-attacks.

Most Christians are fully aware of a frontal assault from the adversary. However, many are caught of guard when a counter-attack comes. The purpose of the enemy's counter-attack is to regain lost territory.

When the person becomes born again the adversary may bring an old before Christ friend who will tempt you to return to late night parties & bars.

Believers who receive the baptism of the H S often must deal with skeptical  relatives who attempt to rescue them from their deception. The same is true with healing. The early full- gospel ministers were continually defending the practice praying for the sick as critics bemoaned or denounced the act of anointing with oil & seeking God for healing.

The adversary is a thief & a robber. He dislikes losing ground  & therefore will make any attempt to steal your blessing, if you permit him to do so.

Some people who are healed have experienced a relapse of a similar affliction. for eg  a person who is healed of a terminal illness is declared clean by their doctor.

Many years later the disease returns, but perhaps to another location in their body. while this certainly does not happen all the time, it does happen from time to time & should be addressed.

Once we have been healed, we must maintain our faith in Christ's ability to preserve our whole body, soul & spirit blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ  Thes 5:23 Here we see Paul's final prayer is that we might be wholly sanctified that is our whole being-spirit soul & body maybe yielded to the will of God. The power for this accomplishment must come from the God of peace Himself.

Perry tells a story of a woman with cancer on her face was standing for prayer while the evangelist was fervently praying for God to perform miracles. Her hand was covering the large cancer on her face & she suddenly cried out as the cancer fell into her hand & her face was completely healed. People began rejoicing. The woman however, said, "I can't believe this...this is impossible...this can't be happening" she placed her hand back to her face & the cancer melted back into her skin! In shock she made a profound statement, "O God; what my faith has taken off, my unbelief has put back on.

The Story of Goliath contains a clue as to how to deal with sickness when it returns. In David's time there were 5 giants who lived in the promised land.

There names were:

Goliath 1 Sam17:4 we are told that he was 6 cubits & a span which is about 9 feet 9 inches. He lived Gath which was a major city of the Philistines not far to the west.  He was a champion which is literally a middle man, one who could decide the outcome of a particular  battle by one single handed fight with a similar champion from the opposing sides.

Ishbi-benob 2 Sam 21:16 He was one of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was 300 shekels who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David

300 shekels is about seven & a half pounds. Sons of the giants is a race of giants from which Goliath had come.

Saph 2 Sam21:18 He also was one of the sons of  the giant.

The giant from Garth. 2 Sam 21:20 This verse says that he was a man of great stature who had six fingers on each hand & six toes on each foot, he was also born to the giant.

Lahmi 1 Chron 20:5 says that he was Goliath's brother.

Goliath was a large & intimidating man that no man or army of Israel was willing to tackle him until a faith filled teenager arrived on the battle field.

Before approaching Goliath, David stopped by a brook (1 Sam 17:40) The reason is obvious to collect five stones that David was prepared to take Goliath out & his four other colleagues. Lahmi as we have just heard was Goliath's brother.

If Lahmi was part of the Goliath family, he may have been the same hight & had the same facial features & threatening voice of his brother, Goliath. & yet he was not Goliath, because Goliath was dead (1 Sam 17.51) which tells us that David took his sword & drew it out of it's sheath & killed him, cut his head off.

We see the very head of Goliath had been removed by the sword of David, a picture of the sword of the Spirit, or the Word of God getting to the root of the problem that is affecting us (Heb 4:12).

Once God has wrought a healing for you, whether through the prayer of faith, a manifestation or through communion, He makes good His healing work, & your faith & obedience maintain a continual flow of life into your spirit, soul & body.

However, occasionally the enemy will counter tack, attempting to bring the very thing you were freed from back into your body.

This is not Goliath because that giant is dead. It may look the same, feel the same, & act the same, but Goliath has a brother. Lahmi Must be dealt with just as Goliath was dealt with.

If a person comes to you asking for prayer because the same ailment is attempting to return. You can tell him it's not Goliath, it's his brother.

 BUT there are still stones in the brook! The point is the same faith that defeated Goliath will also defeat his brother.

The same anointing that brought the initial healing & the same faith that defeated the adversary years ago are the same anointing & faith that can conquer the enemy today! 

If the Lord tarries, we will all have our final day on Earth & pass from this life to the next. We are not presently in an immortal body, & our body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 3:16) Our body which is the building identified as God's temple, made holy by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Here the temple of God is the local Church. In Eph 6:19 it is the individual Christian body, & in Eph 2:20&21 it is the Church.

Our body occasionally needs repairs & maintenance. Throughout our journey storms will come & damage parts of our temple. But just as God cared for His house in Jerusalem, He is concerned about your physical house, which was created in His image.

Here are 3 points to remember:

1 God is able to keep (preserve) what we commit to Him, & this includes our health

(Thes 5:23-24) Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; & may your whole spirit, soul & body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

God's faithfulness gives assurance that we will be preserved blameless until the return of Christ.

2) If the enemy returns, use the same weapons  to defeat him again & again.

 Corn 10:4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.

Our warfare is not against flesh & blood (Eph 6:12) therefore carnal ( weak or worldly) these weapons will not do; we need weapons that are God-empowered (mighty in God) their purpose is for pulling down or demolishing strongholds which is anything opposing God's will.

3) We should maintain faith & fellowship through communion as often as we can or feel led.

1 Corn 11:25 NKJ) In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.

When we come to Communion...

 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me... John 12:32

Communion, Eucharist, The Love Meal, the Bread & the Wine is central to Christianity.  The partaking of it is a command.  One that most denominations follow though our understanding of what it means, the how & the when, may differ & the denomination I most closely affiliate with does not practise it.
The practise of communion, by whatever name it goes by, has always fascinated me.  What is it about this humble meal of bread & wine that Jesus had in mind at that final Passover meal?  It was then, as they shared the final cup, the cup of the Kingdom, that Jesus ended the old covenant, at least symbolically.  I know, it gets strange when a Lit major takes to religion, doesn't it?  The bread & the wine was never going to just be the bread & the wine.   How could it?  This is symbolism that goes all the way back to Abraham & Melchizedek.

This simple meal holds so much rich symbolism I am unlikely to cover it all so I will just touch on a few of the more pertinent points here.  

Firstly:  I have mentioned this is a covenant meal.  You will find a fuller explanation of covenant here. There are 2 elements to covenant: flesh & blood.  The flesh is broken; the blood is poured out because For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.  Oh. My.  Even way back in Leviticus!

Jesus names the elements: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me...

Ever since whatever is used to represent Jesus body, whether it is a wafer, flatbread, unleavened bread or ordinary bakehouse bread, it is broken in two ~ & it is broken in two so that the one making the covenant may pass between the pieces.  I don't think there is any mistake about what Jesus is doing here.  He is making covenant, which would be sealed on the cross & fulfilled at His resurrection. 

Now the bread that Jesus would have used would have been unleavened Passover bread such as this:

 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed....1 Peter 2:24 

As you can see matzeo bread is striped ~ & punctured.  Jesus would have known he was about to be whipped bloody, have a crown of thorns pushed down on His head & nails driven between the fine bones of His wrists & ankles as He took this bread & tore it in two.  For centuries the Jews celebrated this meal with this bread not knowing Christ was represented there.

Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you....Luke 22:20

I am going to say outright that while I have read & understand the arguments for the *wine* being grape juice & non~alcoholic I do not believe they are valid & I will tell you why.  Firstly, the custom, as it still is in many of these regions where wine is drunk routinely, was to water the wine: one measure of wine to 2 of water.  This is because the water is contaminated & full of germs.  The wine, being antiseptic, acted as a purifier ~ I'm sure you can make the analogy!  It is Jesus blood that purifies us!

Now there is one final point I would like to make because I think this is central to the taking of communion, to life in Christ, to walking out our faith.

What we are meant to do in communion is both to recognise Christ's sacrifice for us & to exalt him.  The word used in John 12:32 is  ὑψόω (hypsoō) & means to exalt, not simply to *lift up*.  We are to exalt our Lord & Saviour.  When we do this He is able to draw us with Him into the abundant life in God that we are meant to share.  

As we prepare for communion & enter into he fellowship of believers who are in covenant relationship with Christ, we are meant to exalt His Holy name & what He has done for us.  Then we can lay claim to all the promises Christ's sacrifice bought us: healing, blessing, grace, abundance, joy, peace ~ all this in the midst of trouble & turmoil because we have not been taken out of the world.  We are in the world but we are no longer meant to be of it.  In the partaking of the communion meal we recognise we are in a new covenant, a people called out, set apart, a holy priesthood, a peculiar people, salt & light in a world that knows not its saviour.

And so we come again to communion.

Oh, you may be saying to yourself.  What more is there to say about communion?  we’ve discussed the bread & the wine & the cup of the kingdom.  We remember our Lord’s sacrifice.

So much happened we can’t think of it all at once so the aspect of communion I want to look at today is healing ~ & the kind of healing that took place on the cross for us.

I am going to start with the word Gethsemane.  Yes, that is the name of the garden where Jesus went to pray.  The garden where Judas betrayed him.  The garden where Roman soldiers arrested him.  It still exists today, though the olives that would have been young saplings in Jesus day are full grown trees now.  

Now scripture doesn't do anything by default.  God is very careful & he is particularly careful about names & so the meaning of this name is important & tells us something.  Gethsemane means oil press.  That is somewhere where the ripe olives were put under pressure to release their oil.  Now recent studies of Gethsemane’s olive trees have revealed they are amongst the oldest in the world & are all the shoots from just one parent tree.  Stop & think about the implications of that for a moment.  Oil is almost always symbolic of the anointing of the Holy Spirit & so you have something very beautiful taking place here.  It will not come into fullness until the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit is poured out but the pressing takes place at Gethsemane when the sins of the world are laid upon Christ in the garden.  

We are prone to think that the weight of the world’s sin fell on Christ at the cross but it is here in the garden it begins.  See it was sin that was nailed to the cross.  For that to be so Jesus must already have been made sin for our sakes.  It is a process, tied into Jewish religious custom from the scapegoat to the High Priest’s robe woven as a single cloth.  Under the old covenant, as under the new, the was no redemption without the shedding of blood.  There was blood shed in the garden as the weight of mankind’s sin was transferred to Christ.  It was a struggle.  He was in agony ~ from agon which means a contest, a fight ~ so much so the extreme mental & physical stress caused the blood capillaries to expand then burst so that Luke could say Jesus sweated drops of blood.  It was so agonising Christ begged that if it were at all possible the cup would pass him by.

If we read John 17 carefully we find something very beautiful taking place. Yes, we know Jesus is praying for us; us in our time, before we were even born! But look at what He is praying! I in them & you in me.....that they may be one in us...There is only one way that happens ~ if the Holy Spirit abides in us & we abide in the Word. When you study the Greek in this passage you discover that what Jesus is saying is that he is willing (thelō) , He's exercising His will properly to bring this about.  In the process, in order to accomplish this for us, He is crushed, in God's olive press, just as the olives were pressed to release their oil!  

Hebrews 5 :8 remarks that Christ learnt obedience through what he suffered.  Here too I find something very amazing because what holds Christ steady in His purpose, a purpose that has been foreseen from the beginning of the world?  His friends fall asleep at the critical hour, then desert him.  On the cross even God turns his face away.  But Jesus is a rabbi.  He not only is the Word, he knows the word & what the word says is Surely he hath borne our griefs & carried our sorrows….or as Matthew says Himself took our infirmities & bare our sicknesses.  

Redeeming us from sin is one thing.  Redeeming us from the effects of sin is another & greater work!  When sin entered the world, sickness, death & destruction came in his train.  It was not only our sin Christ took to the cross, it was our sicknesses, our diseases.  When we are redeemed from one, we are also redeemed from the other.  The two go together.  There was no sickness, no disease until sin came through Adam.  When Christ took our sin upon himself he also took on our sickness.  If you are unsure of this go through the scriptures & see how often Jesus tied healing to forgiveness.  When the condemnation sin brings is removed, healing & health become possible because we no longer believe we deserve to be sick.

We have read the story of Christ’s crucifixion so often, watched it in gory detail on the big screen & given it cursory acknowledgement when we come to communion that much of it’s impact is now lost on us.  So we will stop & consider what Christ was doing from the moment he stood before the Sanhedrin betrayed & unjustly accused.

No~one spoke for Christ.  He took the unjust accusations that we might stand before God, declared righteous though we are not of ourselves righteous.  This is a fundamental healing of the relationship between us & God.  We must never forget the first purpose of Christ’s suffering was for restoration: of our relationship with God, of our personhood as originally envisioned by God, of our relationships with each other.

Peter, quoting Isaiah, tells us that by whose stripes ye were healed...healing for the body.  The 40 stripes minus one, to try & ensure the beating didn’t kill a person, was for our physical healing.  It is a very well known verse as it is the one quoted most often.  Thus we overlook that Christ was despised & rejected of men, a man of sorrows & acquainted with grief.  

The crown of thorns was probably made from the jujube tree that produced barbs an inch or more long.  As so often in scripture the symbolism  works on multiple levels but I do not want to focus on the redemption of the land from the curse of thorns & thistles but on the redemption of our minds & emotions.  When Paul tells us to take every thought captive to Christ he can because Christ bore our mental & emotional anguish   The crown reminds us both of his anguish & that he is indeed king of kings & lord of lords & his reign extends beyond the physical to the mental & spiritual realms as well.

All of this Christ took with Him to the cross & bore until the moment He gave up His spirit into the father’s hands.  At that moment he declared IT IS FINISHED, the words the high priest uttered ritualistically after the final Passover lamb was slaughtered.

The redemptive work of Christ was finished in that moment.  He gave everything to redeem all of us: our minds, our bodies, our spirits.  There is healing for every part of man through Jesus Christ.

Both John 14:30 & 1 Cor 2:8 tell us that if satan had known what the cross would accomplish he would have prevented Christ from ever getting there!  

During His time on earth Jesus ministry focused on three thing: Teaching, preaching, healing.  He proclaimed it, he taught it & he demonstrated it.  He went to the cross to restore everything that had been lost in the fall. 

 If you are in need of healing today bring your faith to the communion table. I am not talking superstitious nonsense. I am telling you to do what scripture tells you to do: to exercise your faith & not doubt. As Abraham did.  As Joshua did. Your God knows your every need.  He is the Lord that healeth thee.  Receive & give thanks.
